Senior Living
Downsizing to a senior living community? With so many options available, like the variety of care types and styles of senior living communities available today, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
Senior Living Options
Senior living refers to a range of housing options aimed at retirees looking for specific amenities and care. From independent living to senior apartments and active adult communities to other levels of care, everyone’s retirement situation is different.
With that said, as you research your senior living options, you will find there is no one-size-fits all solution. It’s really about dialing down on what you need in terms of care, amenities and services. With this in mind, we offer some insight on the most common types of senior living options available.
Not A One-Size-Fits All Option
For those in the early stages of their golden years, you probably won’t require as much assistance as some retirees. If this is the case, then independent living is a good option. However, if you need more support, because living alone is no longer safe, assisted living might be the right option. The best way to determine which senior living option is right for you, is to evaluate your Activities of Daily Living.
Basic ADLs:
- Functional Mobility: the ability to move from one place to another independently
- Feeding: the ability to feed oneself
- Dressing: the ability to select appropriate clothing and put it on
- Personal Hygiene & Grooming: the ability to bathe and groom oneself including brushing teeth, combing and styling hair.
Independent Living
Independent living communities are designed to enable active, healthy independent retirees to enjoy a lifestyle filled with educational, recreational and social activities with others around the same age. This type of senior living community gives you access to services and amenities like fine dining and exercise programs, and the freedom to pursue your passions all while living among friends. Whether you want to create your first masterpiece, socialize, or stay active, independent living communities provide just that.
This option is right for you if:
- You are an active independent senior
- That that can safety manage your personal care needs
- With the intention to maintain an active lifestyle.
Active Adult Communities
Active adult communities are designed specifically for individuals age 55 and over. But unlike other retirement communities, this type of independent living community is for those looking to stay active and engaged in retirement.
Senior Apartments
Senior apartments are low-maintenance apartments designed for adults 55 and over who are totally independent, but want to live in a place that requires little upkeep. These communities typically offer social activities and amenities that cater to a specific age group.
Although senior apartments will vary in size and setup, communities like these offer all the benefits of being at home without the worry of chores, maintenance or cooking. The benefits of living in one range from low to maintenance free living and convenient access to amenities and services.
Assisted Living
Assisted living communities are a combination of residential housing and supportive healthcare services. Typically residents in this type of setting need assistance with bathing, meals, and medication. In other words, it is a good alternative for people who are no longer able to live alone.
This option is right for you if:
- You need help with activities of daily living, such as bathing and dressing
- There is an increasing concern about personal care and safety
- Mobility issues make it difficult (or impossible) to safely maneuver inside and outside your home.
