Retirement Is Not About Losing Your Identity. It Is A Chance To Create A Second Act!
Second Act
There are many people who consider retirement to be a blissful payoff for a lifetime of hard work. On the other hand, there are those who have a hard time going from working to not working. They identify themselves as what they did for a living, and forget that retirement is about finding purpose and meaning. Transitioning to a fulfilling, successful retirement can be scary. But remember, you are in control of aging successfully.
Whether you wish to write a novel, or drop everything to pursue a life dream, you can lead the life you’ve always wanted. C.S. Lewis once wrote, “You’re never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” In a world where so much is expected of you, one of the greatest rewards of retirement is when you no longer have to worry about fulfilling all of those expectations.
As a retiree, you are in the driver’s seat. And, while it is not always easy to transition to a life where no one is telling you what to do, fear not. If the freedom feels a bit scary, now is the time to turn that fear into passion. Now is your opportunity not just to reinvent yourself, but to become your true self. Remember, you are NEVER too old to begin again!
It’s Never Too Late
For what it’s worth: it’s never too late to be whomever you want to be…
~F. Scott Fitzgerald

Your True Self
We all have dreams. We all have things we’ve thought about doing all our lives. The most difficult stage in the emotional retirement process, is answering the question “Who am I now?” In fact, most people don’t know what they are passionate about when it comes to the second act. Part of figuring out who you are in retirement comes through deepening your relationship with yourself. The most important thing we can do to become our true self is to pursue the goals that are right for us.
So how do you find your true self and live an inspired life? Start by identifying the goals you want to pursue because you truly value or enjoy them. These types of goals reflect the true self. In addition, finding your true self will require some self-reflection and a willingness to be honest with yourself. And, spirituality is the essential piece of this process. Religious or not, spirituality is a driving force in our lives. It brings an interconnectedness to who we are, and the world around us. For anyone seeking to answer the question “Who am I now?” All you really have to do is look inward.
Find magic in each day and value your uniqueness. Think about the red hat society: when I am old, I will wear a red hat and a purple dress. Uniqueness is the very foundation from which this society was built. As a result, friendship, freedom to express, and a dedication to the fulfillment of lifelong dreams are what these women live by. Revel in your uniqueness and remember, the world needs the contributions that only you can make.
“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”
~Lao Tzu
