Living Your Best Life
“Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.”
~C.S. Lewis
How To Live Your Best Life
Living your best life in retirement can feel like a hard goal to achieve, especially today. That dream you had at age 30 of traveling and experiencing new things may feel more like “Now what?” But rather than focusing on the negative consider this, there is opportunity in adversity. Joseph Campbell once said, “Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.”
Today we are faced with events of adversity challenging us to redefine what normal looks like. And, it is in times like these we must remember, our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but by the choices we make. So, if living your best life is important to you, find a way to move beyond the current circumstances to achieve your dreams.
The Opportunity In Adversity
Events of adversity much like the ones we each face today, gives us the opportunity to find out who we are and what we are made of. It is an opportunity to develop our strengths, and to access aspects of ourselves we never knew existed. It is the ability to choose hope instead of fear, and happiness instead of despair.
Adversity can teach us that we have the ability to rise beyond our environment. As Maya Angelou puts it, “I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.” In other words, everyone deals with adversity, it’s how you bounce back from it that will determine how your life unfolds.
Bouncing Back
Ask anyone what resilience means to them and chances are most will say it has something to do with “bouncing back” from a crisis. We can’t control what is happening right now, but we can control our reactions to it.
If living your best life is important to you, you must increase your capacity for resilience. To do this, build your connections, foster wellness, find purpose, embrace healthy thoughts, and seek help when you need it.
