Getting to Know Maurice Bonny
Maurice Bonny popularly known as Maury, has lived in La Jolla since he was 9 years old. From his home in New York to a home above the La Jolla Cove, Maury met his wife, Gerree, at La Jolla High School. It was here that the rest of their life together began! In fact, they recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on June 29, 2017! Together, Maury and his wife Gerree have a son, 2 daughters, 2 grandsons, and 3 great granddaughters.
With an impressive career as the civilian Department Head at the Naval Air Systems Command, Maury was responsible for the maintenance of aircraft engines, missiles and components from Mississippi all the way to Japan.
After Dedicating 38 Years
After dedicating 38 years to his career, Maury retired from the Rework Facility at North Island, Coronado as Department Head of Planning and Production.
A Time To Travel…
At 55, Maury decided it was time to retire. It was a time in his life meant for traveling not working. So, Maury and his wife Gerree purchased a motor home and embarked on a 3-month trip across the country from the West Coast to the East Coast. For 20 years Maury and his wife traveled, exploring various national parks throughout the U.S. and Canada. From the Panama Canal to the Mexican Rivera and Alaska Maury and his wife also enjoyed going on cruises. Out of all at the cruises Maury and his wife had been on, the European River Cruises were their favorite.
An Active & Athletic Past…
With an active and athletic past, Maury has been a Pool Lifeguard at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. And has enjoyed body surfing, golfing, diving for lobster and abalone, and playing tennis. Today, Maury is still an avid bridge player.
He Recalls The Good Old Days In La Jolla
Maury knows and shares a lot of fun and interesting details about La Jolla, including the fact that La Jolla once had a bowling alley and that the very first stop sign in La Jolla was on the northeast corner of Pearl Street and La Jolla Blvd intersection. He also remembers when taking the long walk on Torrey Pines Road from the Cove to Pottery Canyon to attend Boy Scout activities, he would only see 1-3 cars at most… WOW, those were the good old days!
