Getting to Know Doris Southard
Warm and engaging, Doris is a people person who makes friends easily. She has two sons – Douglas, a retired judge, and David, who has a Ph.D. in computer science. She has five grandchildren and four great grand children. Surprisingly, she herself was the youngest of eleven siblings!
Born In Rural South Dakota…
Born in rural South Dakota (near Sioux Falls) Doris went to elementary, high school and Secretarial College in this midwestern city. In 1945, she and her sister traveled to California. She married Dayton, her high school sweetheart, after he was discharged from the Navy. And, in 2001 she lost her husband of 56 years.
A Los Angeles Secretary & Volunteer…
Before her husband’s work brought her family to La Jolla, Doris worked was a secretary in Los Angeles for Alert Secretarial Services and Parker Aircraft Company. Shortly after their move to La Jolla, Doris was a “stay at home” Mom and volunteer.
Some of her volunteer activities included being a room mother, den mother, Women’s Ministry leader, reading tutor, choir member, and wedding coordinator. Sewing and golf are two of her favorite hobbies.
A Welcome Addition…
Before coming to the Chateau, she and her family enjoyed fifty-seven years in La Jolla. In fact they had homes on Bahia Drive, Rutgers Road, and Via Munera. Doris is a welcome addition to our Chateau community.
