Living Well
“God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well.”
― Voltaire
Living Well
While the thought of living well sounds wonderful, the question is, just how do we do that? Is it a matter of eating well, sleeping enough, and getting plenty of exercise? Or, is it a matter of continuing to challenge yourself and stay spiritually connected? Consider that to live means to act. To live means you participate in life. You initiate action, create goals, make plans to help implement and work on the desired outcome, and dive in.
Now consider that wellness refers to an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy fulfilling life. Living well means you believe, no matter what your age, that you are a work in progress. Still growing, still learning and still stepping outside your comfort zone.
Growing & Learning
Curiosity is a vital ingredient for living well. It is the engine of intellectual achievement and a catalyst for learning and personal growth. Without curiosity, Alexander Fleming would not have discovered penicillin, and Sir Isaac Newton would have never formulated the law of physics. Being curious increases your ability to learn and retain information. It is the fuel you need to keep growing and learning. And the fuel you need to step out of your comfort zone.
“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”
― Albert Einstein
Your Comfort Zone
Your comfort zone is a space where your behaviors and activities fit a routine (pattern). Psychologically speaking, your comfort zone is the place where you feel most at home. As we get older, our comfort zones tend to shrink. But, if we can keep expanding them (with the use of curiosity), we will open ourselves to greater fulfillment and improved wellbeing as we age. To expand your comfort zone, you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
- Stretch Yourself: do the things tell yourself you should but haven’t done
- Take Risks: do the things you wish you could do as if you can
“In order to expand your comfort zone you have to push yourself outside of it.”
