Life Purpose
Stop wasting your life pursing things that don’t bring you joy.
Life Purpose
The purpose of life is a life with purpose. Life purpose is something for which one is responsible. As Khalil Gibran once said, your work is your love made visible. Or simply stated, life purpose is about finding your gift and then giving it away. For some, the question that resonates the most after retirement is, who am I when I am no longer? All too often, what we do defines our self-identity. This can leave many retirees struggling to find their place in life.
As a society, we are far too concerned with what people do for a living. And, because we have all been conditioned to think this way, we may lose our sense of purpose after retirement. But realizing you’ve lost your purpose is just the first step to finding a new one. The beautiful thing is that you are no longer limited to your job! So, if you haven’t yet decided what your new purpose will be, we offer some insight to help you open your mind to new possibilities.
Discovering Your Authentic Self
We all have passions, goals, interests, hobbies, and qualities that make us unique. Each of us was given unique skills, abilities, and values, and a special purpose that we need to fulfill. When you can find a way to do that, life is good. But, the challenge is, we don’t get a set of instructions. And, to make matters worse when we retire, we are essentially asked the same question we were asked when we graduated from school. What do you want to do with the rest of your life? Talk about stressful; maybe not for some, but for most of us, this is simply not an easy answer.
Remember, there is no cookie cutter definition of retirement, not these days. And, life is what we make it, so we can do one of two things. One, we can either choose to do what we were born to do, or two; we can sit back and let life take us over. For those who want to truly live life, not following the herd into a traditional retirement will suit you best. Whether your calling in life is starting your own business, helping inspire others, or working for a non-profit, now is your chance to do what you were born to do. And, the easiest way to find that is to consider one very important question. What is your reason for being?
A Reason for Being
Stop wasting your life pursing things that don’t bring you joy. After all, life is simple; we ourselves create the circumstances that complicate it. Rediscovering your direction and purpose in life after retirement, begins with prioritizing the aspects of life that bring you a sense of joy or purpose. And, a good way figure out what brings you joy, is by finding your ikigai. The Japanese believe that by finding your ikigai, you also find your reason for being.
- Mission: what you love
- Vocation: what the world needs
- Profession: what you can get paid for
- Passion: what you’re good at
Ikigai is the perfect balance of skills, knowledge, and activities, that you are good at, can be paid for, and the world needs. Everyone has an Ikigai, to find it requires a journey of self-discovery, but it’s worth it.
