Getting to Know Donald Butler

With a diverse career history, Donald has an interesting background. During WWII, he spent two years in the Navy. And, after that, he spent two years as a missionary for the Church of Latter Day Saints. Coming home, he was a police officer for a year before going to college at Arizona State University.

Nicknamed Speed Butler…

At age 12, he was nicknamed “Speed Butler” by his Scout Master because he was always the last to get up from dinner. The name stayed with him until age 32. He even had to put Don “Speed” Butler in the local telephone book so people would know who he was.

From Phoenix to LA…

After college, Donald taught in Phoenix for seven and a half years, before moving to West Covina, CA. It was in this city he decided to retire after working for over 31 years.

The Youngest of Seven…

The youngest of seven children, Donald probably has more children than anyone else at Chateau La Jolla. Eleven to be exact! From his first marriage, Donald had two biological children. After that, Donald and his second wife decided to adopt four children. And his third wife who already had five children, whom Donald treated like his own, made it eleven.

He Loves Singing & Genealogy

Donald loves to sing! He always sang in the church choir. In fact, residents say “he knows all the words to every song”! Not only does Donald love to exercise, he also loves playing trivia and bingo. Every Thursday night he plays hand and foot canasta with residents and friends. Interestingly, Donald also loves genealogy.

Genealogy, The Little Curiosity…

Interestingly, Donald has shifted his interests to genealogy. Whether his ancestors are a source for inspiration, genealogy provides a doorway to the past. This little curiosity created a wonderful new hobby for Donald that he loves.
